Rebs fall in tourny to top teams

Tournament finishes with Rebels in the stands

Georgia Tech singles player, Irina Falconi, defeated Southern Cal’s Sarah Fansler 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to win the flight one singles championship at the 2009 Freeman Memorial Women’s Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Fresno State’s Tinesta Rowe won the flight two title against USC’s Lindsey Kinstler by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
UNLV’s only team to make a championship final was Alisa Razina and Anna Maskalkun. They, however, lost in the flight two doubles championship match 8-5 to Leyla Entekhabi and Cristala Andrews of USC.
The top singles players for UNLV were Katy Williams and Adrienn Hidvegi, who each advanced to the quarterfinals and Maskalkun, who made it to the semifinals before falling to Lindsey Kinstler 6-2, 6-2.
The Rebels’ top doubles team, Katy Williams and Kristina Nadeltcheva, lost in the quarterfinals of the flight one tournament 8-3 to the eventual champions Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State.
This tournament offered a slew of top ranked players including the reigning and defending singles National Champion.
The Lady Rebels are currently ranked No. 39 in the country and were 10th out of the 11 teams competing in the tournament. The tournament included three of the top five teams in the nation – UCLA (No. 3), Baylor (No. 4) and Stanford (No. 5).
In additional matches played on the final day of the tournament, Kristina Nadeltcheva defeated Shinann Featherson of North Carolina 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
UNLV will begin the dual match portion of their schedule Friday when they take on the Aggies of New Mexico State at home at 10 a.m.
