Deadly Seven kills at House of Blues alt text

February 19, 2009 by Jordan Healy

There was no better place to spend Friday the 13th than the House of Blues with Vegas’ best local band, Deadly Seven.

Although the show wasn’t well-advertised, and the Seven themselves didn’t take the stage until well after midnight, the room was (packed) when they delivered a crushing headline set complete with blood, feathers and a good dose of classic punk rock with a newly-sharpened edge.

For the uninitiated, the Deadly Seven are a group of seven equally beautiful and dangerous punk rock queens who perform updated covers of punk-rock classics with a backing band that utterly kills live. In addition to the band themselves, the show is only augmented by the presence of several men in SWAT riot gear and two other men wearing only horse-head masks and briefs.

The girls commanded the stage with ease, looking down on the crowd from their platform heels and nearly naked bodies, save for panties and a dab of electrical tape. Whether they were writhing on the stage covered in blood during their own version of Fear’s “I Don’t Care About You” or beating each other with pillows during the Dead Kennedy’s “Too Drunk To F—,” they held the hungry audience’s undivided attention.

In fact, half the fun was watching the audience. When the Seven came onstage, three shirtless men materialized in the mosh pit wearing pig masks. They ran through the crowds, taking high-fives and stirring up more of a ruckus. A girl in the front screamed for one of the men in the horse masks to pour blood all over her head, and he obliged did during the last number, leaving the girl looking like she walked out of the movie “Carrie.”

Before the Seven came on, the crowd was treated to Dead Birds and Blind Kids, a pretty much straightforward punk rock group reminiscent of the Descendents. The group’s lyrics were more on the humorous side, and the band engaged the audience in the show for their entire set. At one point, their vocalist had the crowd members walk around and give as many high fives as possible instead of the typical mosh pit and the crowd did exactly as they were asked.

For those who missed out, Deadly Seven will returning to the House of Blues on Friday the 13th of March.

Be there or be dead.
