Sports Shorts: Women’s golf cards a win
March 12, 2009 by Joseph Romero
After a rough start, UNLV women’s golf jumped to the top of the leaderboard and eventually won the UNLV Spring Invitational on Wednesday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Three players turned in rounds below par, for a two-round score of 595 (plus-19) heading into the final round.
Alejandra Guacaneme, Natasha Krishna and Therese Koelbaek led UNLV with a two-shot lead over Texas Tech.
Guacaneme scored a 75 (plus-3) and Krishna scored an intimidating 69 (minus-3) to make a big presence as the middle day of the tournament came around. Koelbaek also scored a three-under 69 during her second round. That moved her from a tie for 39 to a tie for the 13th spot.
“We have put ourselves in great position to win if we play well tomorrow.” Says Missy Ringler, UNLV head coach.
UNLV fielded two teams at its second home tournament of the season. Kristen Schelling is tied for the 25th spot and Bethany Glassford is tied for the 76th slot.
Gamecocks blank Rebels
The UNLV women’s tennis team came home empty handed last Wednesday after their confrontation with South Carolina at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
USC took all three doubles matchups for one team point.
In singles, UNLV pushed two matches into a super-tiebreaker but lost both. Adrienn Hidvegi lost to Miljana Jocic (10-7) while Senior Katy Williams fought a close match but fell to Dijana Stojic (11-9).
The Lady Rebels will be facing Virginia Commenwealth on Friday with doubles starting at 10 a.m. This is a home game and admission is free.
