Student writers have opportunity to talk to experts
Aspiring writers have a chance to learn about publishing from those who know best.
To honor the more than 100 members of the UNLV community who published during 2008, the Lied Libraries will host the 7th Annual Celebration of UNLV Authors April 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the first floor extended study area behind the Book ‘N’ Bean.
For students who aspire to become writers, this is a golden opportunity to meet experienced and authors who were successful in publishing.
“This is the seventh time we are conducting the event and we are looking forward for it,” said business librarian Patrick Griffis, explaining the efforts the library staff is taking to put forth this event.
“I’m very excited to honor and celebrate the faculty and staff members who have published a book,” said Rhiannon Reynolds, development specialist at UNLV libraries.
“It’s an annual event where we acknowledge the books written by UNLV faculty members,” Griffis said.
He explained that the Lied Library takes pride in showing support for these authors by buying their books.
“We actually buy the books for the authors and display them as part of our library collection,” said Griffis, who is organizing celebration.
“This is one aspect that shows the relationship between the librarians and the UNLV faculty,” said Debbie Millet, external relations manager at UNLV libraries.
Millet explained some of the other efforts the library makes to help faculty, such as supporting the university mission of research and community and working with the faculty and staff to design the course curriculum.
The event will open with a welcome from President David B. Ashley and Patricia Iannuzi, dean of university libraries, who will remark on the scholarly achievements of the authors.
An interactive session will follow, in which attendees of the event can talk with the authors. Sodexho will provide refreshments.
