WAC comes to the Orleans
The Western Athletic Conference announced Wednesday that the 2011 and 2012 WAC Basketball Tournaments will be held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The 2011 WAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 9-12 and will include the top eight teams in the regular-season standings. Reno hosted the 2009 tournament.
“More tournaments are moving to neutral locations,” said University of Nevada, Reno President Milton Glick, who also serves as chairman of the WAC Board of Directors.
“The decision to move the 2011 WAC Basketball Tournament to Las Vegas is positive for the fans, the conference and the tournament.”
The 2010 tournament will be played in Reno at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center.
Rebels make academic pick
Four UNLV Volleyball student athletes were recognized Wednesday by the Mountain West Conference for their achievements on the court and in the classroom. Biology major Erin Greenwood, nursing major Kelsey
Keeler, kinesiology major Tabitha Mabrey and journalism major Jessica Walters were honored as part of the MWC Scholar-Athlete Team.
Greenwood has received the award four times, Walters three times and Keeler and Mabrey two times each.
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor offered within the conference. Recipients must have completed at least two academic terms at their institutions, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
