The centennial state gets best of UNLV’s soccer team
The UNLV’s men’s soccer team must continue to wait to get in the win column in conference play. They drew with Denver and lost to Air Force.
After dominating the first half on Friday, UNLV gave up two goals late in the second half and failed to score in extra time, forcing a 2-2 draw with Denver University.
Stephen Sifuentes got the Rebels (6-5-3, 0-3-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) off to a strong start in the third minute. He headed in a shot from the right side to give UNLV a 1-0 lead.
Sifuentes doubled the Rebels’ lead on Denver (3-7-3, 0-2-1) in the 39th minute after a give-and-go with Zach Kupfer opened up a lane to score his second goal of the game.
Despite UNLV holding Denver scoreless for 75 minutes, the game unraveled quickly.
Jarod Stigall got the Pioneers on the board with a goal in the 76th minute. Nathan Sackeyfio then rebounded a shot in the 85th minute to get the equalizer.
UNLV didn’t have much opportunity to score in extra time, as they played the last 10-minute session shorthanded. The referees booked Sal Ornelas with a red card in the 100th minute, forcing the Rebels to finish the game with 10 men.
Although Denver got two shots at goal in extra time, they did not capitalize, ending the game in a draw.
The game was fairly equal, as they both got 11 shots off on the night and the Rebels only held a 6-5 edge in the corner kick department.
UNLV gave up another late goal on Sunday to lose to Air Force 2-1.
The game was tied at 1-1 until Jared Gomez took a shot on goal in the 86th minute that deflected off a UNLV defender and into the goal.
The Falcons (7-5-1, 2-2) scored in the 30th minute to get the early lead, but the Rebels countered with an equalizer from Zach Kupfer in the 70th minute.
UNLV played a man down for the final 60 minutes of the game, Nick Marshall received a red card in the 30th minute.
