Candidate disqualified

CSUN approved the disqualification of college of sciences Senate candidate William King-Lewis and fined him $110 for violating UNLV and CSUN election rules in a meeting yesterday.

Allowed two minutes to argue his case, Lewis said he was not given the election codes and did his best to follow CSUN rules. Lewis argued that his flyers, which depict the silhouette of Elvis Presley, do not identify him and were not part of his campaign materials.

“I feel that it would be unfair for the rest of the candidates,” argued Senate president Victor Barragan, “because this is a marketing style.”
Barragan asked Lewis if he thought his flyers were advertising for his campaign.

“I don’t feel like these are advertising anything,” said Lewis. Lewis argued that the posters for were a Halloween party where he would be dressed up as Elvis.

Barragan added that because the logo on the flyers was a depiction of Elvis, students would draw a connection between “The King” and King-Lewis.

“You branded yourself as the king,” said Barragan.

Lewis was fined for failing to submit samples of his campaign materials and for violating UNLV posting policy by posting prior to the set election date started.

The consensus of the room was that Lewis’ materials became a marketing tool once he used the Elvis logo to refer to himself along with his name.In a 3-0 vote, King-Lewis was disqualified from the election. King-Lewis was fined $5 for fourteen offenses where his flyers were found around campus prior to the election, and eight times at $10 for each offense where the campaign flyers used a different word and had not been submitted for approval, for a total of $110 dollars. Any votes for Lewis will not count, and his name will be removed from the ballot.
