Rebels dominate swim meet in Houston over weekend alt text

No. 24 UNLV men’s swimming shines and women get high praise

The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming teams posted 11 individual and relay victories at the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational in Houston this weekend.

The men sent 10 swimmers to the event while the women sent two for the three-day meet.

Louisiana State won on the men’s side with 1,448 points. UNLV finished in third place with 678 points, nine points behind second-place Southern Methodist.

The women finished ninth with 48 points. Texas A&M won with 1,563 points.

UNLV got their first of four consecutive wins on Friday night, as the 200-yard freestyle relay team won with an NCAA “B” time of 1:20.30.

Steven Nelms, Charlie Tapp, Thomas Andolfsson and Kyle Virva made up the relay team.

Kyle Maitland then posted a “B” time of 4:22.23 in the 500 free en route to a victory of his own.

David Seiler added a 1:50.90 time in the 200 individual medley and Nelms scored a victory in the 50 free with a 20.26 time.

The men’s 400 free relay also won on Friday with a time of 3:17.42.

Their other three wins came on Saturday, as the men’s 200 IM team posted a “B” time of 1:28.49, Cody Roberts won the 100 butterfly won with a 48.25 time and Virva won the 200 freestyle with a 1:39.07 time.

On Sunday, Nelms won the “A” final of the 100 free with a time of 44.80.

Andrew Morrell won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:01.67.

Daniel Egly touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly finals (1:48.82) and the 400 free relay squad did the same (3:00.59).

On the women’s side, Marva Harpak and Brittany Ozar both had their best performances in the 200 free, where they placed in the top 10. Harpak finished ninth (1:50.30) and Ozar finished 10th (1:50.51).
