Meet the SORCE staff alt text

When organizations on campus need a place to create signs, design flyers or organize a booth, they all come to one place: the Student Organization Resource Center – aka the SORCE room.

Located on the third floor of the Student Union, this room is available to all registered organizations on campus. From arts and crafts supplies and helium balloons to computers, they offer numerous choices at no cost for the organizations.

For the folks at the SORCE room, the main idea is for students to get involved on campus activities. They are there to help organizations all over campus to get the word out and attract as many people as possible.

So next time your association is planning a new event or needs a new brochure, head over to the third floor for some fun and some help.

What is the SORCE room to you?

The SORCE room is several things to me. First, it’s my place of work – working there is how I pay for my cell phone bill, car insurance and any other expenses that I may come across throughout the semester.

Second, the SORCE room is a place of growth. Caroline and others that work in the department have worked with our SORCE staff on a personal level, helping us learn more about ourselves in and outside of the workplace. If it was not for me working in the SORCE room, I would have missed out on opportunities like Leadershape, CLR and running for a Senate seat in CSUN.

Lastly, the SORCE room is a nice spot to hang out at. I can honestly say that this is the only job that I want to be at even when I’m not working. The SORCE room has a very chill environment and it’s a place I can go to when I need to de-stress, laugh or just relax.

What is the best part of your day when you are at the SORCE room?

I would say that what I enjoy most about my shift is when other staff members come in to hang out while I’m on the clock. It makes my job more enjoyable and I don’t feel like I’m “working.”

What is your favorite supply at the SORCE room?

My favorite supply has to be the Cri-cut (pronounced “cricket”). It cuts out letters, shapes and pictures in almost any size. It’s great for making posters, banners, bookmarks and birthday cards. I use it all the time.

Caroline El-Khoury, Program Coordinator

How did you get involved with the SORCE room?

The SORCE room is a part of the position description for my job. When I was job searching in Nevada in 2007, I saw this position description and it sounded like too much fun to get paid for.

What is the SORCE room to you?

Resource for students and a social spot where strangers have something in common: their passion for their organization.

What is the best part of your day when you are the SORCE room?

See the smiling SORCE staff and seeing the students work on projects. The creativity and teamwork seen in the SORCE room reminds me of how we all should be working together.

What is your favorite supply at the SORCE room?

The Cri-cut! A scrapbooker’s dream. Stencils, clip art and text all bundled in one cost-effective tool.

What is the SORCE room to you?

It’s just a great place to interact with many types of students. You learn something new by talking to other students.

What do you like about the SORCE room?

It’s a place where organizations can come together. It’s a central place.

Brandon Fox, Graduate Assistant

What is the best part about being a part of the SORCE room?

One-on-one interaction with students and answering questions. Also, the students that are looking to get involved.

What is your job at the SORCE room?

I supervise the SORCE staff and operations of the SORCE room. I’m also in charge of training.

What is the SORCE room to you?

First and foremost, it is a job. After that it is a gathering place, a great place to hang out and meet new people. It’s a place of fun.

What is the best part of your day?

The best part is just being able to interact with other students and provide them with information and help them find the best organization that fits them.

Ashley Brooks, SORCE Staff

How did you get involved with the SORCE room?

I had been looking for an on campus job at the end of spring semester last year. I had applied to many different job opportunities here at UNLV that I had heard of from various people, like my adviser for the organization I am in. From there, I ended up here.

What is the SORCE room to you?

It’s my home away from home. Although this is work, all of my co-workers and the people that end up coming here to use our resources are always so enjoyable that I tend to just find myself here on my free time. I feel that this place makes people feel comfortable and relaxed to where they can be themselves, making it easy to make new friends and join new organizations.

What is the best part of your day when you are the SORCE room?

This is going to sound a little silly, but the best part of my day is using the cri-cut. It is this amazing machine that cuts out any shape that is under the sun and can be cut out any way that you want. I love helping people use the machine and give them ideas for their banners. It’s fun to see people be just as amazed by the machine as I always am!
