EDITORIAL: Diversity on the rise despite falling funds Default Thumbnail

February 1, 2010 by The Rebel Yell

UNLV can’t buy culture, but celebrating it is worth a million bucks.

The history of race relations in the United States is inextricably tied to the economy of social difference. Segregation perpetuated unequal education between racial groups largely through poor funding for the education of the victims of discrimination.

We at UNLV are fortunate to be pushing forward in the ever-vital race against racial stereotyping and prejudice, despite failing funds.

The fact that promoting cultural awareness events and supporting national celebrations like Black History Month remains important to the leadership of UNLV, no matter the economic climate, is a mark of the steps forward we have taken as a society, and signs that the momentum is not about to die.

In a community where building strong bonds between individuals of different races, cultures and religious and ethnic identities is a top priority, no strain on the pocketbook can halt the advance of the issues that pull at our hearts.

On Tuesday, a panel gathered at UNLV to discuss the rich history of Black culture in Las Vegas, starting off a series of events aimed at remembering the history of Black America and looking toward the future.

A discussion on Feb. 11 on “Race Relations and Racism” will unite students and faculty to debate topics including racism, classism, inner race racism, sexism, political views, stereotypes and educational issues.

The Mr. Black History Pageant on Feb. 16, hosted by the Society for Black Engineers and the Black Student Assocation, will celebrate the men of yesterday and today in honor of Black History Month.

Special guests KRS One and a tribute to Michael Jackson top the list of attractions for Jazzitudes 2010, set for Feb. 18. This yearly celebration of Black History Month through art and food is an event not to miss.

Whether you’re looking to commemorate your own cultural history or learn about someone else’s, February is the time to do it. Explore the events UNLV hosts this month and remember to be thankful that to the leaders of this university, a world of justice and diversity is priceless.
