IN BRIEF: Smatresk talks budget cuts alt text

February 1, 2010 by The Rebel Yell

UNLV President Neal Smatresk posted a letter on the UNLV budget Web site assuring his colleagues that he is working with leaders in the state legislature on behalf of the university.

The special session of the Nevada Economic Forum, which was held Friday, prompted Smatresk to write the letter. He discussed the findings addressed at the meeting.

“Members of the forum estimate that revenues over the current biennium will be down by almost 11 percent or approximately $580 million,” Smatresk said. “This figure does not include fixed costs associated with the budget which could increase the shortfall to as much as $800 million.”

Smatresk admitted that the numbers were unsettling but remained confident in the abilities of the people around him throughout the letter.

“We are developing strategic plans to address the budget challenges. I am also incredibly proud of the faculty, staff and students of UNLV for pulling together in these difficult times and continuing to work hard to achieve our vision for the future,” he said.
