Some students buy baked goods, others donate money

The Sierra Student Coalition prepared healthy snacks to sell to students, but many students just wanted to help give food to others.

The SSC Vegan bake sale on Jan. 26 raised $430 to benefit victims of the earthquakes in Haiti, through donations to Habitat for Humanity.

The Las Vegas Veg group and SSC members donated food to the effort.

“We actually had a lot of different stuff,” said Ilonka Zlatar, president of SSC. “We had a suggested donation of a dollar for each, but a lot of people dropped a lot more than that and some didn’t take anything. They just said they wanted to help.”

SSC member Peter Delantar also commented on students’ generosity.

“They stopped by, paid for the treats and usually contributed extra money when they heard it was for Haiti,” Delantar said. “They were really generous.”

The Sierra Student Coalition, UNLV’s only club devoted specifically to environmental work, is the student-run chapter of the Sierra Club.

SSC is committed to promoting student awareness of environmental issues and encourages students to become active in protecting the planet.

“We’re a really different organization compared to others,” Delantar said. “Vegas especially really needs someone to care about sustainability issues and UNLV campus in particular. It brings awareness to the student body.”

“Our mission is to try to educate the student population on how to become more environmentally conscious,” Zlatar said. “We try to make it a place for enacting ideas.”
