EDITORIAL: Danger and disrespect: not fun in the long run
September 14, 2009 by Editorial staff · 2 Comments
During the tailgate before Saturday’s football game, a mob of more than a hundred drunk male students crowded around a stripper pole that had been set up in a thoroughfare in the designated tailgating area.
Two girls were in the center of the crowd and, to chants of “take it off,” one stripped down to a g-string and gyrated around the pole.
We don’t know whether she stripped because she wanted to or because she felt pressured to, but she could not have escaped the horde even if she had wanted to – the strong will of the masses that cheered her on wasn’t easy to ignore and they had trapped the two in.
This whole show went on without interruption from security guards on foot or the mounted police that patrolled the area.
Amid the drunken haze of the mob this weekend, the girls dancing on the pole could easily have been dragged out by some ill-intentioned individual, and from what we can tell, nothing would have been done about it.
In fact, we don’t know what happened to them once the crowd dispersed – they could have been in more danger and no one would have known.
Even the activities we did witness could have been enough to cause serious psychological damage.
We are not willing to risk sacrificing physical and emotional well-being of students in the name of these antics.
In general, we support a good party in interest of student involvment and for most of the activities that go on at tailgates. We’re glad law enforcement keeps their distance most of the time.
We are interested in preserving this age-old college tradition and we don’t think anyone would want police traipsing through the grounds checking students’ IDs or telling them to turn their music down.
We don’t want to advocate increased police involvement at UNLV tailgates, but if our students continue to engage in destructive, boorish and downright vile behavior, we will be forced to advocate for stronger law enforcement.
Who are you to think a good time is joining a mob to debase two of your peers?
Have you no shame in finding camaraderie in joining a hundred other people to pressure a fellow student to take her clothes off?
For the girls also, if you participated in this activity by will, not by force, then you should realize that you are risking your own safety and the freedom of others to enjoy the event.
Your actions are revolting and you’re about to ruin the fun for all of us.
It’s time that students take some moral responsibility. There is a line between having fun and engaging in dangerous behavior, and this incident is proof that many students are just fine with crossing it.
Well, no more.
Rein in the vulgarity and show some respect for your peers and yourselves, or get ready to host a much stronger display of authority at your next tailgate. Your one night of self-indulgence is not worth the physical and mental health of your fellow students.
Who is to blame?
Is it whoever brought the stripper pole with the goal of geting young, dumb freshman girls to get up there and get even dumber freshmen guys to join in the gawking? Or the girl who feels the need to impress these newfound “friends?”
Practices like this ruin tailgating for others and sooner or later will result in tighter restrictions and less fun for everyone.
